Our River Playground
By Anna Notley and Uncle Carl

For ages 5+
“Uncle Carl is waiting to welcome us to his playground. Come listen to his stories. Come look at the water full of life. Come paint the river with us and learn to care for this country.”
This book, written by Anna Notley and Gomeroi community elder Uncle Carl, is a reflection on the importance of place and conservation of the natural environment. Gomeroi artist Elenore Binge has drawn on her own childhood in Toomelah and Boggabilla to create her striking illustrations.

Our River Playground was inspired by school-based events held in Toomelah and Boggabilla, as a partnership between literacy education provider MultiLit and the Painted River Project. A collaboration between Western Sydney University and Monash Sustainable Development Institute, the Painted River Project hosts community-based art and science events which engage with and draw on the knowledge of local Indigenous communities, to promote awareness of the importance of natural water resources across ecological, cultural and economic domains.
This partnership and the events have been generously supported by Bank Art Museum Moree, OzFish, and Northern Gomeroi River Rangers. Putto Press would like to extend special thanks to Uncle Carl and the staff and students of Boggabilla Central School, a participating school in the MultiLit Closing the Gap School Partnership Initiative, for contributing their enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity to these events, and providing the inspiration for this book.
